Trump said he discussed North Korea with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday at their summit in Helsinki.

"President Putin is going to be involved in the sense that he is with us," Trump said.

North Koreas Kim and Trump met in Singapore for a summit on June 12 where Kim vowed to denuclearise his country.

Kim made a broad commitment in Singapore to "work toward denuclearization" but did not give details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear programme. Trump in turn offered security guarantees to Pyongyang and pledged a halt to large-scale military drills with South Korea.

North Korea's latest comments, which came after Pompeo's recent visit, were a reminder of the difficulties that previous US administrations have had negotiating with the reclusive state.

Leaked US intelligence findings have concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear programme completely.

A day after the meeting, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the bulk of North Korea's denuclearisation should be completed by the end of Trump's term in 2020.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he received a note from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dated July 6 in which Kim said he believed their efforts to improve relations will succeed.

Kim said he hoped for "practical actions" in the future, but offered no specifics.
