Just days after the Helsinki meeting with Trump, Russian PresidentVladimir Putin while addressing ambassadors in Moscow accused "forces in the US" for "sacrificing" Russian-American ties.
Watch: Melania looks horrified (seriously) after meeting Putin
President Trump was severely criticised after he openly said Russia did not meddle with the US elections in 2016 during a joint press conference with Putin at Helsinki. However, on Wednesday, the US president made a U-turn and insisted that he had "full faith and support for America's intelligence agencies".
Putin, however, hit out at the US asserting that some forces sacificed Russia-US ties for "own ambitions".
"We see that there are forces in the US that are easily ready to sacrifice Russian-American relations for their own ambitions," Putin said in a speech to Russian ambassadors who gathered in Moscow.
The White House meanwhile declined to rule out Russian proposal for questioning US officials on its soil who are being sought by Russia for "illegal activities.
"The president is going to meet with his team and we'll let you know when we have an announcement on that," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said. Trump had said it was an "interesting idea" and had declared he would "work with his team" and determine if there was any validity which would "help the process."
On Wednesday, the Russian Prosecutor General's office listed Americans it wants to question for "illegal activities",including Michael McFaul, who was US ambassador to Russia during the Obama administration. It also named other US officials.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert called the Russian allegations "absolutely absurd."
"The prosecutor general in Russia is well aware that the United States has rejected Russian allegations in this regard," Nauert said.
