Virat Kohli comes to Dhoni's defence, says questioning his finishing skills 'unfortunate'

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Story highlights

Dhoni played 59 balls to make just 37 runs in the second ODI.

Minutes after Indialost second ODI to England by huge 86 runs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was once again at the receiving end for playing slow instead of hitting big ones.

The former Indian skipper, who became the fourth batsman to complete 10,000 runs in ODIs, played 59 balls to make just 37 runs, an inning considered by many the reason behind's Indian's loss.

When questioned to Virat Kohli about Dhoni's finishing abilities, the skipper once again came to his teammate's rescue and said, "This thing comes up whenever he (Dhoni) isn't able to play the way he wants. People just wait to jump on him. When it works, they call him the best finisher and if it doesn't, they jump on him."

Further analysing the team's performance, Kohli said he expected the English side to bounce back after losing the first game.

“This thing comes up again and again when he’s not able to play the way he does,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"It’s unfortunate that people jump to conclusions quickly. When he does well, people call him the best finisher ever, and when things do not go well, people pounce on him,” the Indian captain seemed trifle irritated with knee jerk reactions from fans and critics alike."

“The idea was to take the innings deep. He has the experience but sometimes it doesn’t come off. We totally believe in him and the ability of all the players.”

The Virat Kohli-led side was all-out for 236 runs with Suresh Raina being the highest scorer with 46 runs in 63 balls, which included just one boundary.

Kohli also fell five runs short of his half-century and was lbw off Moeen Ali.

For England, Joe Root slammed 113 runs to set a mammoth target of 323 runs for the 'Men In Blue' at Lord's London on Saturday.

While bowler Liam Plunkett took four crucial wickets to deplete the Indian batting side.

With the win, England levelled the series 1-1 with the series decider being played on Tuesday, July 17.
