The Supreme Court of Pakistan ousted Nawaz Sharif as prime minister of the country last year after revelations in the Panama Papers. The court had then instructed the country's National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file corruption cases against the Sharifs.

Nawaz and Maryam watched the watched the verdict today at Avenfield House. They are in London for the treatment of Nawaz Sharif's wife, she was recently diagnosed with cancer.

NAB accused the Sharifs of purchasing the flats with money over and above their known sources of income. The Sharifs rejected the accusation of wrongdoing but were unable to show where the money for the flats had come from.

The case took nine months to conclude.

Nawaz was handed a £8 million fine, and and Maryam a £2 million fine. The money will go into the state treasury.

Nawaz's son-in-law, retired Captain Safdar, was also sentenced to a year in jail for not cooperating with NAB.

Nawaz and Maryam were sentenced to 10 and seven years in jail respectively for abetment. They were also both sentenced to a year in jail for non-cooperation with the NAB but the sentences will run concurrently.
