Jammu and Kashmir Police released photos Thursday of the suspected killers of veteran journalists Shujaat Bukhari.
The police said the killing had been carried out by the Lashkar-e-Taiba, and that the plot to kill Bukhari had been hatched in Pakistan.
"This terror crime was done by Lashkar-e-Taiba and the conspiracy was hatched in Pakistan," IGP, Kashmir SP Pani said.
Pani identified the suspected killers as Sajad Gul, now based in Pakistan; Azad Ahmed Malik, allegedly an LeT oeprative from Anantnag district; Muzafar Ahmad Bhat, again allegedly with the LeT; and Naveed Jatt, who had escaped form Srinagar's Sri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital in February this year.
Jatt had escaped in the middle of a terror attack mounted to help him make his getaway.
Pani said they had got their evidence from "service providers", meaning they had tracked the suspected killers' mobile phones.
Bukhari, editor of the Kashmir Rising newspaper, was shot dead as he left his office in Srinagar Press Enclave on June 15.
Police had released images of three men on a motorcycle shortly after the killing, saying they were suspected to have carried out the assassination. Two policemen guarding Bukhari — terrorists had tried to kidnap him earlier too — were also killed in the attack.
The general consensus was that Bukhari, a voice of moderation in Kashmir, had been killed because he continued to advocate for peace in the Valley.
