Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Smriti Irani reacts sarcastically to ‘Amethi wants Robert Vadra’ posters

Several posters of Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, have been put up at several places in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, demanding his candidacy in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the sitting Amethi MP Smriti Irani gave a sarcastic comment on the posters. Indian National Congress (INC) has not announced any candidate for the constituency yet.
The posters of Vadra were put up with the words "Amethi ki janata kare pukaar, Robert Vadra ab ki baar (People of Amethi wants Robert Vadra this time)". They were also seen outside the Congress office in Gauriganj.
This comes days after Vadra announced his intentto run for the Lok Sabha seat in Amethi, a constituency that remained a bastion of the Gandhi family until Irani won the seat in 2019.
Amethi remained a favourite seat of the Congress and the Gandhi family and was represented by Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Other parties also won in between, but the 2019 victory for BJP was significant.
In 2019, Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi, but he won from Kerala's Wayanad. Now speculations are rife over whether or not he will contest from Amethi again, as he is contesting from Wayanad, which votes on April 26.

Earlier this month, Vadra told news agency ANI: "The people of Amethi expect me to represent their constituency if I decide to become a member of Parliament. For years, the Gandhi family worked hard in Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur."
"The people of Amethi are really troubled by the current Member of Parliament, they think they have made a mistake by electing her," he had said.
While reacting to the posters, Irani said, "Jijaji ki nazar hai, saale sahab kya karenge. (brother-in-law is eyeing the seat, what will he (Rahul Gandhi) do?) There was a time when people travelling in buses would leave their handkerchiefs to mark their seat so that no one sits on it."
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, "His brother-in-law (Rahul Gandhi) will say whether they would make him (Robert Vadra) contest. I have no such information."
