As Tamil Nadu declared a week-long mourning on Tuesday in the wake of ex-chief minister Karunanidhi's death, DMK supporters demanded land at Marina beach for an "Anna memorial".

However, theAIADMK government rejected DMK's demand for giving space for M Karunanidhi's burial at Marina beach.
No former chief minister of Tamil Nadu has ever been buried at Marina beach with only sitting CMs allowed memorials at the site.Former chief minister M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalitha were buried at the Marina beach.
DMK working president M K Stalin, recalling the long public life of Karunanidhi, had written to chief minister K Palaniswami seeking space inside the mausoleum complex of the departed leader's mentor C N Annadurai at the Marina. Stalin had also met the chief minister hours before his father's death.
A government statement said it was "unable to allot space at Marina beach owing to several pending cases in the Madras High Court and legal complications."

Hence, the government is prepared to allott a two-acre site on Sardar Patel Road near the memorials to Rajaji and Kamaraj, it said. DMKmoved the Madras High Court challenging the AIADMKdecision.Senior counsel for DMK P Wilson and Saravanan went to acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Huluvadi G Ramesh's residence and sought permission to move an urgent motion.
The acting chief justice directed them to serve notice on the advocate general, saying he would hear the case at 10.30 pm at his residence.
Meanwhile, the DMK said family and relatives can pay respects toKarunanidhi from 8:30pm to 1am tonight.
The Prime Minister's Office said PM Modi will leave for Chennai in the morning and return by evening. In his condolence message, PM Modi said Karunanidhi stood for regional aspirations as well as national progress.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi will also be reaching Chennai on Wednesday along with other Congress leaders to pay homage to Karunanidhi. The Congress president condoled the demise of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi and said he strode the stage of Tamil politics like a colossus for six decades.
The Congress leader said India has lost a "great son".Karunanidhi passed away today in Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. He was 94.
